Substitution

Reaction ExplainedIn a Substitution reaction, a functional group in a particular compound is replaced by another group. Organic substitutions are classified in several main organic reaction types, the electrophilic and the nucleophilic substitution reactions are very important in organic chemistry. Other substitution types include Radical and Organometallic. Classifying organic reaction types depend on whether a reactive intermediate involved in the reaction is a carbocation, a carbanion or a free radical, the reagent that brings out the substitution is considered an electrophile or a nucleophile, or whether the substrate is aliphatic or aromatic. It is helpful to optimize a reaction with regard to variables such as choice of solvent and temperature.
